Constantine XI was the final emperor of the Byzantine Empire, ruling a state reduced mainly to Constantinople and a few holdings. He led the defense of the city during the Ottoman siege of 1453 and died as it fell. His exact death is not documented, and he became a legendary figure in later Greek tradition.
