Hohenstaufen emperor who fought the Italian cities and the papacy.

Frederick I, called Barbarossa for his red beard, sought to reassert imperial authority in Italy against the Lombard League and the papacy. He was defeated at Legnano in 1176 and later reached terms with the cities. He drowned in a river in Anatolia while leading the Third Crusade.
