Charles V

Charles V ruled the Holy Roman Empire, Spain, the Low Countries, and Spain's American possessions, a realm so large it was said the sun never set on it. He spent his reign fighting France, the Ottomans, and the spread of the Protestant Reformation. Worn down, he abdicated his thrones and retired to a monastery, dividing his lands between his son and his brother.
