Vasco da Gama led the first fleet to sail directly from Europe around Africa to India, reaching Calicut in 1498. His voyage launched Portugal's maritime empire in the Indian Ocean. His exact birth year is uncertain, usually placed around 1460 to 1469, and he died in India as viceroy.
