Ferdinand Magellan, sailing for the Spanish crown, set out in 1519 to reach the Spice Islands by a westward route. He found the strait at South America's tip that now bears his name and crossed the Pacific. He was killed in the Philippines, and his surviving crew completed the first voyage around the world.
