Manuel I reigned as Portugal opened sea routes to India and Brazil and grew rich from the spice trade. He sponsored the voyages of da Gama and Cabral and promoted the ornate Manueline style of architecture. His reign also saw the forced conversion and expulsion of Jews and Muslims from Portugal.
