Maurice of Nassau, son of William the Silent, reorganized the Dutch army and won a series of campaigns in the war against Spain. His reforms in drill, engineering, and organization influenced armies across Europe. He also clashed with the statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt in a bitter political and religious dispute.
