Michiel de Ruyter was the leading Dutch naval commander of the 17th century, winning victories in the Anglo-Dutch Wars. His raid on the Medway in 1667 struck deep into English territory and remains among his most famous exploits. He died of wounds received in battle against the French in the Mediterranean.
