Jan van Riebeeck established a resupply station for the Dutch East India Company at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652, the origin of Cape Town. The outpost grew into a permanent colony and shaped the later history of South Africa. His arrival is a contested landmark, marking the start of European settlement and of long conflict with local Khoikhoi peoples.
