Atahualpa won a civil war against his brother Huascar to control the Inca Empire just before the Spanish arrived. He was captured by Francisco Pizarro at Cajamarca in 1532, paid a huge ransom in gold and silver, and was executed anyway. His death marked the effective end of independent Inca rule.
