Tupac Amaru II, a curaca claiming descent from the last Inca rulers, led a large revolt against Spanish colonial rule and its labor and tax system in 1780. The rising spread widely before being crushed. He was captured and executed in Cusco, and his name became a symbol for later independence and indigenous movements.
