Pedro I of Brazil

Pedro I declared Brazil's independence from Portugal in 1822 and became its first emperor. Born a Portuguese prince, he later also briefly became King Pedro IV of Portugal before abdicating that throne. He gave up the Brazilian crown in 1831 in favor of his young son and returned to Europe.
