Mesrop Mashtots devised the Armenian alphabet around 405 to allow scripture and learning in the Armenian language. His script underpinned a flowering of Armenian literature and helped preserve a distinct national identity. He is also linked by tradition to early alphabets for Georgian and Caucasian Albanian.
