Vartan Mamikonian

Commander who died defending Armenian Christianity at Avarayr.

Vartan Mamikonian led Armenian forces against the Sassanid Persian effort to impose Zoroastrianism in the Battle of Avarayr in 451. He was killed in the fighting, and though the battle was a military defeat, it is seen as securing Armenia's Christian faith. He is venerated as a saint and national hero.
