Muhammad Ahmad proclaimed himself the Mahdi, a guided redeemer, and led a religious and political revolt against Egyptian and British rule in Sudan. His forces captured Khartoum in 1885, where General Gordon was killed. He died soon after, and the Mahdist state he founded lasted until 1898.
