Lobengula ruled the Ndebele kingdom in present-day Zimbabwe as European interest in its land and minerals grew. He signed concessions, notably the Rudd Concession, that Cecil Rhodes's British South Africa Company used to justify occupation. War with the company followed, his capital fell, and he died in 1894 while fleeing.
