Saadia ben Joseph was head of the talmudic academy of Sura in Babylonia and a founder of medieval Jewish philosophy. He translated the Hebrew Bible into Arabic and wrote 'The Book of Beliefs and Opinions', an attempt to reconcile reason and revelation. He led the rabbinic camp against the Karaites, who rejected the Talmud.
