Hasdai served as physician and adviser at the court of the Umayyad caliph in Cordoba. He used his position to support Hebrew poets and grammarians, helping open the golden age of Sephardic culture. He is also known for his correspondence with the king of the Khazars, a people said to have adopted Judaism.
