Samuel HaNagid rose to become vizier of the Berber kingdom of Granada and led its armies in the field, an unusual role for a Jew of his time. He wrote Hebrew poetry and works on the Talmud while holding office. His son Joseph inherited his position but was killed in the 1066 Granada massacre.
