Rashi lived in Troyes in northern France and wrote line-by-line commentaries on the Hebrew Bible and the Babylonian Talmud. His explanations became the standard gateway for students and are still printed on the same page as the texts they explain. He lived through the massacres of the First Crusade, which struck the Rhineland Jewish communities.
