Known simply as Rabbi, Judah ha-Nasi led the Jewish community of Roman Palestine as patriarch. Around 200 CE he edited and arranged the oral traditions into the Mishnah, giving rabbinic law its first written framework. The later Talmud is structured as commentary and debate on his Mishnah.
