Jacob ben Meir, a grandson of Rashi, was the foremost of the Tosafists, scholars who cross-examined the Talmud through sharp comparison of its passages. His rulings carried great weight across Ashkenazi communities. He was assaulted during Second Crusade violence but survived, and later convened rabbinic gatherings to legislate for French Jewry.
