Santangel came from a family of Jewish converts to Christianity and served as a chief financial officer to King Ferdinand. He advanced and arranged much of the money for Christopher Columbus's 1492 expedition after the crown hesitated. Members of his family were prosecuted by the Inquisition for secretly keeping Jewish practices.
