Oppenheimer served as court factor to the Habsburg emperor, raising and supplying money for the wars against the Ottoman Empire and Louis XIV. His firm handled vast sums, making him one of the most powerful financiers in Central Europe. When he died the crown effectively defaulted on its huge debts to him, ruining his estate.
