Born into a converso family that migrated to New Spain, Carvajal secretly returned to Judaism and wrote a spiritual memoir under the name Joseph Lumbroso. The Mexican Inquisition arrested him, and after relapsing into Jewish practice he was burned at the stake in 1596 along with several relatives. His surviving writings are among the earliest known Jewish texts produced in the Americas.
