Edmund Dene Morel was a shipping clerk who noticed that ships returning from the Congo carried rubber and ivory but sent back mostly guns and chains, evidence of forced labor. He founded the Congo Reform Association in 1904 and built a global campaign against Leopold II's regime. He later became a Labour MP and a leading critic of the First World War.
