Roger Casement was a British consul whose 1904 report on the Congo Free State gave official weight to the reform campaign, and he later exposed similar abuses against rubber workers in the Putumayo region of South America. He turned to Irish nationalism and sought German help for the 1916 Easter Rising. He was arrested, tried for treason, and executed; his so-called Black Diaries were used to discredit him and remain contested.
