Moise Tshombe declared the mineral-rich Katanga province independent in 1960 with backing from Belgian interests and mercenaries, deepening the Congo Crisis. He was linked to the events surrounding Lumumba's death. He briefly served as national prime minister in the mid-1960s, then went into exile, was kidnapped, and died in detention in Algeria.
