Dag Hammarskjold was the second Secretary-General of the United Nations and oversaw the large UN peacekeeping operation deployed during the Congo Crisis. He died in September 1961 when his plane crashed near Ndola in what was then Northern Rhodesia, while on a mission connected to the Katanga conflict. The cause of the crash remains disputed, and multiple inquiries have not fully settled it; he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize posthumously.
