Joseph Kabila became president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2001 after the assassination of his father, Laurent-Desire Kabila. He presided over the end of the Second Congo War and the country's first multiparty elections, but faced criticism for delaying the vote at the end of his term. He handed power to Felix Tshisekedi in 2019 in the country's first peaceful transfer between leaders.
