Zachary Taylor

Twelfth U.S. president and Mexican-American War general.

Taylor was a career soldier who won major battles in the Mexican-American War. Elected president in 1848, he opposed the spread of slavery into new territories despite being a slaveholder. He died suddenly in office in 1850.
