Amilcar Cabral founded the PAIGC and led a highly effective guerrilla war against Portuguese colonial rule in Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. Trained as an agronomist, he was also an influential theorist of anti-colonial struggle and culture. He was assassinated in 1973, months before Guinea-Bissau declared independence.
