Agostinho Neto was a physician and poet who led the MPLA in the war against Portuguese colonial rule. He became Angola's first president in 1975, as the country slid into a long civil war between the MPLA, UNITA, and the FNLA, drawing in Cuban and South African forces. He died in 1979 while still in office.
