Kenneth Kaunda led Zambia to independence from Britain in 1964 and served as its first president for 27 years. He championed his own philosophy of humanism and gave refuge and support to liberation movements fighting white-minority rule across southern Africa. He lost power in multiparty elections in 1991 and accepted the result, a notable peaceful transfer.
