Robert Mugabe led ZANU's guerrilla struggle against white-minority rule in Rhodesia and became Zimbabwe's leader at independence in 1980. Early praise for reconciliation and education gave way to condemnation over the Gukurahundi massacres, violent land seizures, economic collapse, and rigged elections. He was forced out by his own party and the military in 2017 after 37 years in power.
