Frantz Fanon was a psychiatrist from Martinique whose writing became foundational for anti-colonial thought. In Black Skin, White Masks he examined the psychology of racism and colonial subjugation, and in The Wretched of the Earth he analysed colonial violence, national liberation, and the dangers of a self-serving national bourgeoisie after independence. He joined the Algerian independence struggle and worked for the National Liberation Front. He died of leukaemia in 1961, the year The Wretched of the Earth appeared.
