Eduardo Mondlane was a US-educated academic who founded and led FRELIMO to unite Mozambique's independence movements against Portuguese rule. He directed the early years of the liberation war from exile in Tanzania. He was assassinated in 1969 by a parcel bomb, an act widely attributed to the Portuguese secret police.
