Oliver Tambo was a lawyer and close colleague of Mandela who led the African National Congress from exile after the movement was banned in 1960. He kept the ANC alive as an international force, building support and directing the struggle against apartheid for nearly 30 years. He returned to South Africa as the movement was unbanned and died shortly before the first democratic elections.
