Walter Sisulu was a central organizer of the ANC who helped modernize it and mentored younger leaders including Mandela. Convicted in the Rivonia Trial in 1964, he spent 26 years in prison, much of it on Robben Island. Released in 1989, he helped guide the ANC through the transition to democracy.
