Nnamdi Azikiwe, known as Zik, was a US-educated journalist and one of the foremost figures in Nigerian and West African nationalism. He led the NCNC and became the first president of Nigeria at independence in 1960. His tenure ended with the 1966 coups that preceded the Biafran war, and he remained an influential elder statesman.
