Albert Luthuli was a teacher and Zulu chief who became president-general of the ANC in 1952 and led its campaigns of nonviolent resistance to apartheid. He was banned and confined by the state for much of the period. In 1960 he became the first African awarded the Nobel Peace Prize; he died in 1967 in disputed circumstances, struck by a train.
