Samuel Maherero was paramount chief of the Herero in German South West Africa. In 1904 he led an uprising against German settlers and colonial rule over land and cattle. German forces under Lothar von Trotha crushed the revolt with an extermination campaign now widely recognized as genocide; Maherero escaped into exile in British Bechuanaland.
