Lothar von Trotha was the German general sent to crush the 1904 Herero uprising in South West Africa. His extermination order and the driving of survivors into the Omaheke desert, followed by mass deaths in concentration camps, are widely described as the first genocide of the twentieth century. Germany formally acknowledged the genocide against the Herero and Nama in 2021.
