Ferdinand Marcos was president of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986 and ruled under martial law from 1972. His government, backed by the United States for its anti-communist stance, was marked by repression and vast corruption estimated in the billions. The People Power revolution of 1986 forced him into exile in Hawaii, where he died.
