Alfredo Stroessner ruled Paraguay from 1954 to 1989, one of the longest dictatorships in South American history. His anti-communist government, backed by the United States during the Cold War, jailed, tortured, and disappeared opponents. Paraguay was a key participant in Operation Condor, the coordinated repression among South American regimes; he was overthrown in 1989 and died in exile in Brazil.
