Eduardo Galeano was a Uruguayan journalist and writer whose 1971 book Open Veins of Latin America traced five centuries of foreign plunder of the region's resources. Written for a wide audience, it became a defining popular statement of dependency and anti-imperialist thought. Galeano later said he had outgrown the book's rigid framework, but it remained hugely influential.
