Josiah Mwangi Kariuki was detained during the Emergency and wrote a memoir of the detention camps, Mau Mau Detainee. As an MP he became a popular critic of corruption and inequality, warning that Kenya was becoming a country of ten millionaires and ten million beggars. He was abducted and murdered in 1975; a parliamentary inquiry pointed toward senior figures, and suspicion fell on people close to the government, though responsibility was never conclusively established. His killing became a symbol of the gap between independence promises and the new elite.
