Ras Makonnen

Ras Makonnen, born in British Guiana, was a Pan-African organiser and businessman who funded and ran much of the movement's practical work in Britain. He was central to organising the Fifth Pan-African Congress at Manchester in 1945 alongside Padmore and Du Bois. He later moved to Kenya at the invitation of Jomo Kenyatta after independence. His memoir Pan-Africanism from Within records the movement from the organiser's side. His exact year of birth is not firmly documented.
