Stanley Mathenge was one of the early leaders of the Mau Mau forest fighters and, unlike the literate Kimathi, drew authority from his standing as a fighter. He and Kimathi clashed over leadership of the forest movement. He vanished around 1955, and his fate has never been established; a widely reported claim in 2003 that an elderly Ethiopian man was Mathenge returned from exile was never confirmed. He remains a mysterious figure of the uprising.
