Barghash bin Said, a son of Seyyid Said, ruled Zanzibar from 1870 to 1888 at the height of British pressure over the slave trade. In 1873, pressed by the British and the diplomat John Kirk, he signed a treaty ending the seaborne export of enslaved people and closing Zanzibar's main slave market. He modernised Stone Town with piped water and other public works and expanded his mainland claims, even as European powers moved to carve up East Africa. He died in 1888 as German and British spheres were taking shape.
